How to Make the Old Cuban, or The Best New Years Eve Cocktails!

December 28, 2013 Nick McAfee 2

Champagne and other sparkling wines have become ubiquitous with New Year’s Eve, and all of the posts leading up to the new year will use that amazing ingredient.  Sparkling wine is not a well known cocktail ingredient, however it can be used to make marvelous new cocktails or put a surprising twist on classics.  One such classic is the mojito, which evolves into a wonderfully sparkling cocktail, the Old Cuban. The Old Cuban 1.5 oz. Rum 1 oz. simple syrup ¾ oz. fresh lime juice 6 mint leaves 2 dashes Angostura Bitters 2 oz. chilled champagne or dry sparkling wine (optional) garnish with a mint sprig or lime twist Begin by muddling the mint leaves with the fresh lime juice in the bottom of a shaker.  Once muddled, add a generous portion of ice and add the simple syrup, rum, and bitters.  Shake until fully chilled.  Strain the cocktail into Learn More

Now that a large population of the US capital no longer has to go to work, the bars and restaurants of DC have taken it upon themselves to give these employees something to do, namely drink.  There are some amazing specials in DC that will last the duration of the shutdown, so save your penny’s and enjoy these locations on the cheap.   Below are some of the best deals I could find. DC Shutdown Drink Specials Austin Grill: Happy Hour specials are offered all day to anyone with a government ID or furlough notice for as long as the shutdown lasts. Breaking Bad Finale Cocktails or A Shot as Strong as Blue Sky

September 29, 2013 Nick McAfee 0

Breaking Bad’s famous crystal blue meth in the show has many names: Blue Sky, Fring’s Blue, Big Blue, and Blue Magic.  The more important fact is that it is 99.1% pure.  While I would love to make a cocktail that was equally pure, the fact is that there would be almost no room for any flavor.  And of course the other problem is that the strongest commercial spirit, Everclear, is only 95% alcohol.  The solution (no pun intended)?  Make a drink that is 99.1 proof.  I present you with a shot of Blue Sky. The Blue Sky Shot 1 oz Everclear 0.25 oz Peach Schnapps 0.74 oz Blue Powerade This shot is smoothest chilled, so shake all ingredients with ice and pour into a shot glass.  This runs the risk of lowering the proof (it will, there is no way to prevent dilution), but makes this shot burn a lot Learn More

Sunday Funday: Breaking Bad Finale Cocktails, Part 1

September 29, 2013 Nick McAfee 2

Breaking Bad is ending today and it’s all about the blue crystal. There is no question that everyone will be glued to the series finale of Breaking Bad to find out what happens to all of the characters.  Although Walter and Jesse may focus on meth production, here at Broke & Thirsty the focus is on spirits and great cocktails.  I see no better way to salute such an amazing show like Breaking Bad than with a cocktail.  Or even better, lots of cocktails.  Here are a collection of breaking bad themed cocktails collected from around the web, with more of my own recipes appearing soon. Sunday Funday: DC Beer Week! or how to drink amazing craft beer on the cheap

August 12, 2013 Nick McAfee 0

Sorry for this late post and for a general lack of posts this weekend. But there was a reason for my absence: I was helping out with the great week long event that is DC Beer Week! But why should you care about DC Beer Week? Three words: cheap craft beer. I spent yesterday volunteering for a great brewery tour called the DC Brewline that was organized by the Washington City Paper and Reston Limousine. We toured six great local breweries and learned a lot about the brewing culture that is just starting in DC. Now enough about me, lets get to the good part: the beer. The world has a lot to look forward to, because after talking to all the great brew masters at breweries such as DC Brau, 3 Stars, Port City, and Bluejacket, there are some great little known beers that are being produced and even Learn More

Celebrate! It’s International Beer Day!

August 2, 2013 Nick McAfee 1

Today is International Beer Day! Okay, it sounds awesome, but what does it really mean and what is it for? International Beer Day was founded in 2007 by a couple of guys named Jesse Avshalomov and Evan Hamilton who appreciated friendship and beer and decided the world should have a day of celebration. Starting with a couple bars and pubs and spreading to more and more locations each year. According to the official IBD website, the purpose of this great day is threefold: 1) To gather with friends and enjoy the deliciousness that is beer. 2) To celebrate the dedicated men and women who brew and serve our beer. 3) To bring the world together under the united banner of beer, by celebrating the beers of all nations and cultures together on this one remarkable day. Right…so the third part might seem a bit far fetched. But guess what? It’s Learn More
