How to Make the Rickety Cocktail, or a twist on DC’s official cocktail during the shutdown

How to make a Rickety CocktailToday, the US government decided to shutdown for the first time since 1996.  In honor (or is it more in mourning?) of this event and to give everyone who no longer has to go to work something to do, I have modified DC’s official drink, the Rickey, to better fit the mood of this day – bit bitter with a touch of rye humor over this surprising reality.

The Rickety Cocktail aka the Shutdown Cocktail
  • 2 oz rye whiskey
  • 1/2 lime
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • 2 dashes Grapefruit Bitters (optional)
  • 4 oz club soda

Pour the rye whiskey into a highball glass and squeeze the juice of half  a lime and drop the spent lime into the glass.  Add the bitters and stir gently.  Add several ice cubes and top off with club soda.  Serve with a straw.

I did a bit of experimenting with which bitters would best compliment this cocktail and eventually it came down to either grapefruit bitters or orange bitters.  I decided on the grapefruit because it adds to the overall profile I wanted for this cocktail: refreshingly bitter with strong hints of rye and citrus.  The orange bitters overpowers the rye a bit and detracts from this profile.

The rye is the star of this cocktail, so it is important to choose the right rye.  Ryes, unlike bourbons, don’t come cheap.  The best low-end value rye I know of is Overholt, which can be purchased for around $15/fifth.  If you are willing to spend a little more, you can’t go wrong with either Bulleit or Rittenhouse Rye (both for about $25/fifth).

Total cost per drink: $1.23
